Transgenic Cotton: An Update and Field Experiences in California. CA Cotton Review 58, 3-7
| Vargas R., Hutmacher, B., Wright, S. (2001).
| For about five growing seasons, transgenic cotton has been grown on commercial acreage in CA, including both B.t. varieties and, herbicide-tolerant varieties. The herbicide-tolerant varieties grown in CA include Roundup Ready cotton and BXN (Buctril-tolerant) cotton. Research with the latter has shown good performance in controlling many weeds but has also identified some problem areas requiring more research and alternative management practices. Research with RR cotton indicates excellent control of summer annual broadleaf weeds and grasses. The authors caution farmers to resist the tempration to rely on only one of these herbicides to solve weed problems. Otherwise there is a real possibility for more rapid development of resistant weeds. With regard to B.t varieties, bollworms and budworms are not major insect pests in most of the cotton-growing areas and therefore interest in expanding acreage has been low.
