| The frequency of resistance in bacteria and the numbers of drugs to which they are resistant are increasing. A strain of Salmonella enterica is reported that is resistant to five drugs. today over 40% of the 23 million kg of antibiotics produced in the US is used in animals. Of this, more than 80% by weight is used subtherapeutically for growth promotion; the rest is used for therapy. Both uses can increase the likelihood of multidrug resistance.
