Growth of domesticated transgenic fish - A growth-hormone transgene boosts the size of wild but not domesticated trout. Nature 409, 781-782
| Devlin R., Biagi, CA, Yesaki, TY, Smailus, DE, Byatt, JC (2001).
| The effect of introducing a growth-hormone gene construct into fish to increase growth rates appears to be dependent on the degree to which earlier enhancement has been achieved by traditional genetic selection, as the growth of transgenic wild-strain rainbow trout did not surpass that of a fast-growing non-transgenic domesticated strain of trout used in aquaculture. The phenotypic and genetic character of the starting species or strain, as well as the strength of the gene construct, need to be considered when attempting to improve agricultural animal species.
